Jane Austen Regency era fashion plates for collages, journals and mixed media projects
Jane Austen Regency era fashion plates
The Regency period (1811-1820) , also known as the Jane Austen period was a time of change in fashion. Elaborate and restrictive corsets, panniers, and hoopskirts from the 1700s was replaced with the Empire look which encompassed natural lines, softer fabrics and simpler silhouettes.
In the18th and 19th century, affluent ladies referred to beautifully drawn illustrations of the latest fashions to keep updated on trends. These “fashion” plates” were published in French, English and American fashion journals and ladies would use these to show their dressmakers on which styles they wanted custom made.
By the mid 1800s across both England, France and America, there were estimated to be over 100 different magazine titles which featured ladies fashion plates
These included:
- Godey’s The Lady’s Book of and Magazine of Belle, Letters and Fashion
- Ackermann’s Repository of Arts
- La Belle Assemblee
- Harper’s Bazaar
- The Young Ladies Journal
- Journal Des Demoiselles
- The Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine
